What gematria mean

gematria is an ancient Hebrew tradition of assigning numerical value to words and letters that was used to study the Bible and other sacred works. It consists of assigning numerical values to each letter in the Hebrew alphabet, and finding a correlation between certain words. Gematria was first developed by ancient Jewish scholars as a means of understanding the hidden meanings behind words and their relationships with each other.

Gematria contains several different techniques, the most important being "equals," "adds," "subtracts" and "multiplies." In equals, two words or phrases are given a numerical value, each letter being assigned its own associated number, such as Aleph (1), Mem (40), Shin (300) or Tzaddi (900). The numerical value of those two words or phrases must then match for them to be equal. With adds and subtracts, multiple values are added up to form a new expression. Multiplies involves multiplying one number by another until it reaches a certain conclusion.

Some believe that Gematria can be used to find hidden correlations between religious works that can not easily be seen in plain text. For example, it is believed that by finding such correlations between different texts in Gematria one can find connections between various events throughout Bible scriptures. Such correlations may lead to deeper understanding about the divine plan for Israel or for humanity in general.

Despite its use for theological purposes, gematria has also been used as a tool for divination in Kabbalah – a branch of Jewish mysticism involving interpretation and visualization of divine mysteries – by rabbis seeking answers from God on certain matters using encrypted texts Theodicy – an attempt at reconciling the goodness of God with the existence of evil in the world).
